The DiwanPeshkar of Cochin Province Mr.Sankarayya was the master brain behind establishing a park in 1885 called Viyyoor Park at Viyyoor, where the Central Prison is presently located. The park was closed in 1898 as the number of visitors to the Park were very less. The park was shifted and renamed as "Cochin State Museum" in 1912 by the acting Diwan K. Narayana Marar to an Annexe of Krishna Vilasam Palace, Eranakulam. The museum was shifted in the same year to Chembukkavu where it still exists. A full time archaeologist, L. K. Anantha Krishna Ayyar, was appointed to look after the Museum, in the year 1913. The Zoo was also established in the year 1913 by the King of Cochin and he donated different types of animals from Thrippunithura Palace.
