Sree Chithra Art Gallery
The Sri Chithra Art Gallery was opened to the public by the erstwhile Maharaja of Travancore Sri Chithira Thirunal on the 25th of September 1935. The Gallery owes it's origin to Dr.J.H.Cousins, the Art Advisor to Government of Travancore. It has a rich collection representing the various genre of paintings in India along with a few from other parts of Asia.
The arrangements of paintings in the gallery was done under the direction of Dr. J.H Cousins. A large collection of paintings is a generous gift from the Royal House of Travancore and also the Kilimanoor Royal Family.
Ravi Varma Paintings
The major attraction of Sri Chitra Art Gallery is the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. He belonged to the royal family of Kilimanoor and rose to international fame when he won an award at the exhibition of paintings in Vienna in 1873. Hamsa Damayanthi, Sakunthala, Gypsies of South India, Mohini Rugmangada, Milk Maid are amoung his renowned paintings.Paintings of other members of the Kilimanoor royal family: Consisting of Raja Ravi Varma, C.Raja Raja Varma, Mangala Bai Thampurati and Rama Varma Raja.
